Hungary long maintained a de facto state monopoly on online casinos through Szerencsejáték Zrt., but under EU pressure it opened the market: since 2023 foreign operators have been able to apply for national online casino and betting licences under the oversight of the Regulatory Affairs Authority (SzTFH). Legal sites must comply with requirements on identification, responsible gambling and a self-exclusion register. Land-based casinos are few and operate under concessions, the largest in Budapest. The currency is the Hungarian forint; bank cards, transfers and e-wallets are used. Players' winnings are generally exempt from income tax. Players should choose operators that have obtained a Hungarian licence under the opened market.
