History & atmosphere

Casino de Montréal is the largest casino in Canada, opened by the state-owned company Loto-Québec in 1993 on the scenic Île Notre-Dame in the middle of the St. Lawrence River. Its home is the striking multifaceted France Pavilion built for the Expo 67 World's Fair, adjoined by the former Quebec Pavilion. Five floors of gaming rooms with panoramic windows offer views of the river and Jean-Drapeau Park, and the interiors blend 1960s architectural modernism with contemporary design. Here there are about three thousand machines, tables for all the classic games, a poker room and an elegant cabaret theatre with a dinner show. The casino is famous for having no hotel within the building itself and for its reputation as a place for a stylish evening out for city residents. A fine-dining restaurant, regular concerts and proximity to the city make it a cultural landmark, not merely a temple of gambling.
