History & atmosphere
Crown Melbourne is the largest casino resort in the Southern Hemisphere, stretching along the south bank of the Yarra River in the heart of Melbourne. Opened in 1997, the complex brings together a huge casino, three hotels including the five-star Crown Towers, dozens of restaurants from famous chefs, nightclubs, cinemas and a shopping arcade of luxury brands. Its gaming area is one of the biggest in the world: here you'll find not only international classics but also Australian exotics like Two-Up. The resort's symbol is the evening show of the Gas Brigades fire columns along the promenade, when the gas towers hurl giant balls of flame into the sky every hour. Crown was long the flagship of the Australian gambling industry, weathered high-profile misconduct investigations and changed owners, but remains the main draw of Melbourne's nightlife. The waterfront by the casino is a popular spot for strolls and riverside dinners.
