History & atmosphere
Foxwoods in the forests of eastern Connecticut is a legend of Native American gambling and for a long time the largest casino resort in the Western Hemisphere. The story began in 1986 with a bingo hall, and a full-fledged casino opened in 1992 when the Mashantucket Pequot tribe won the right to run games of chance. Today it is a giant complex of several connected buildings with six casinos under one roof, thousands of slot machines, hundreds of tables and one of the biggest poker rooms on the continent. Beyond gaming, Foxwoods offers the luxurious The Fox Tower skyscraper, golf courses, the Tanger outlet center, a spa, bowling and the MGM Grand Theater concert hall where world stars perform. The resort became an economic engine for the region and a model of how indigenous peoples turned a gaming right into a thriving business. Located between New York and Boston, it remains a favorite getaway for millions of New England visitors.
