History & atmosphere
Luxor opened in 1993 and became one of the most recognizable silhouettes of Las Vegas — a giant black glass pyramid thirty stories tall with a replica of the Great Sphinx at its entrance. From the apex of the pyramid the Luxor Sky Beam shoots into the sky, one of the most powerful beams of light on the planet, visible for tens of kilometers and even from airplanes. Inside, inclinator elevators rise at an angle along the sloping walls. The interiors are done in an ancient Egyptian theme with hieroglyphs, statues and obelisks. The gaming floor occupies the base of the pyramid and adjacent buildings. Beyond the casino, Luxor is known for its affordable prices, the Blue Man Group show, an interactive Titanic exhibition with authentic artifacts and the Bodies exhibit. It is a more democratic but striking resort, ideal for a first acquaintance with Vegas. The Luxor pyramid has long been one of the symbols of the world's gambling capital.
