History & atmosphere
Marina Bay Sands is the most recognizable symbol of modern Singapore and one of the most expensively built casino resorts in the world (over 5.5 billion dollars). Three 55-story towers are joined by the giant ship-shaped SkyPark platform with its legendary infinity pool, which overlooks the bay and the skyscrapers of the business district. Below sits one of the largest casinos in Asia across four levels, a shopping mall on a canal with gondolas, the lotus-shaped ArtScience Museum, theaters and Michelin-starred restaurants. Opened in 2010, the complex instantly turned Singapore into the region's gambling capital, competing with Macau. The casino operates around the clock; locals must pay an entry fee, which curbs problem gambling. The evening Spectra laser show over the bay is a free spectacle that draws thousands of tourists to the waterfront.
