Sands Macao is a historic casino that opened in 2004 and became the first Western-style gambling house after the end of the SJM monopoly. It launched Macau's modern golden era: Las Vegas Sands recouped its investment in just one year, triggering an avalanche of investment that turned the city into the gambling capital of the world. Located on the peninsula near the ferry terminal, Sands Macao greets guests with a multi-storey hall beneath a huge golden atrium, where hundreds of baccarat tables operate around the clock. Unlike the themed giants of Cotai, the emphasis here is on pure gambling and convenience for the flow of players arriving from Hong Kong and mainland China. The resort offers VIP salons, Cantonese restaurants and live performances in the Sands Theatre. Although it was later overshadowed by the mega-complexes of Cotai, Sands Macao remains a landmark, a symbol of the birth of the new Macau and the starting point of the entire industry that overtook Las Vegas in turnover.
