History & atmosphere
Studio City is a cinematic resort by Melco Resorts, opened in 2015 on Cotai and inspired by the aesthetics of Hollywood glamour and Art Deco. Its architecture deliberately evokes a fantasy film soundstage, and its main attraction is the Golden Reel, the world's first figure-eight Ferris wheel, fitted between two of the hotel's towers at a height of about 130 metres and styled in steampunk fashion. The resort was conceived as an entertainment centre for the whole family: it features a virtual attractions park, cinemas, live shows and a water park added during the Studio City Phase 2 expansion. The casino is decorated in the spirit of classic Hollywood, offering baccarat, slots and tables for both the mass and premium segments. Studio City was Macau's answer to the authorities' call to diversify the industry, shifting the emphasis from pure gambling to tourism and entertainment. It is one of Cotai's most photogenic spots, where gambling sits alongside the atmosphere of the silver screen.
