History & atmosphere
Sun City is a legendary casino resort in the very heart of the South African bush, the brainchild of tycoon Sol Kerzner, opened in 1979 in what was then the Bantustan of Bophuthatswana, where gambling was permitted in circumvention of apartheid-era South African law. Kerzner turned an arid valley near a volcanic crater into a fantastical oasis with man-made jungle, waterfalls and the legendary Palace of the Lost City hotel, styled as a lost African palace. The casino became an epicentre of glamour: stars flocked here for concerts and matches, and a famous boxing bout and the Miss World pageant added to the resort's global fame. Beyond the gaming floors, guests can enjoy the Valley of Waves water park with artificial waves, two championship golf courses and safaris in the neighbouring Pilanesberg reserve. Sun City remains to this day a symbol of African luxury and gambling.
