Slovakia opened a regulated online market after a reform of its gambling legislation: oversight is provided by the Gambling Regulatory Office (URHH), which issues licences for online casinos and betting, maintains a register of self-excluded persons and blocks illegal sites and payments. Previously online casinos were a state operator's monopoly, but the market is now open to private and international brands as well. Land-based casinos and slot halls are widespread, though individual municipalities may restrict their placement. The currency is the euro; bank cards, transfers and e-wallets are used. Players' winnings are generally exempt from income tax. Players should choose operators holding a URHH licence and avoid sites on the blocked register.
