Uruguay keeps gambling under state control. Land-based casinos operate legally: some are state-owned and run by the General Directorate of Casinos (Dirección General de Casinos), others by private concessionaires in Punta del Este and Montevideo. The online segment, by contrast, is closed: articles 244 and 245 of Law No. 19.535 of 2017 expressly prohibit virtual casinos, poker, roulette and slots, as well as any online betting without prior state authorisation. The only legal online sports-betting site is Supermatch, a concession of the National Directorate of Lotteries and Quinielas (DNLQ). Illegal sites are blocked and their advertising and payments restricted. The currency is the Uruguayan peso. Bills to open the market are under discussion but, as of 2026, none has been passed. For now only the state operator is available to players.
