Indonesia maintains a complete ban on gambling. It rests on Law No. 7 of 1974 on the Control of Gambling and on criminal law: the former Articles 303 and 303 bis of the Criminal Code and, since 2 January 2026, the new Criminal Code (Law No. 1 of 2023). Distributing gambling content online is pursued under the Electronic Information and Transactions Law. No licences are issued for casinos or online gaming and there are no legal operators. The Ministry of Communications and Digital Affairs (Komdigi) blocks sites and accounts on a mass scale, the financial intelligence unit PPATK freezes accounts tied to gambling transfers, and the supervisory authority OJK orders banks to block them; in Aceh province sharia law applies in addition. The currency is the Indonesian rupiah, with payments via banks and e-wallets. Taking part in online gambling is punishable and can lead to frozen funds.
