Regulation
Gambling is prohibited in Nepal as a general rule under the Gambling Act, 2020 of the Bikram Sambat calendar (1963) and the Criminal Code 2074 (2017), whose section 125 expressly criminalises gambling. Land-based casinos are the exception: they operate under the Casino Regulation, 2070 (2013) at star-rated hotels, licensed by the Department of Tourism under the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation. Only foreigners may play — admitting Nepali citizens is grounds for revoking a licence. The annual royalty under the 2024/25 finance act is 50 million rupees for a casino and 15 million for electronic gaming halls. Online betting is unlawful: on 30 March 2026 the responsible ministry ordered such platforms shut down and the Nepal Telecommunications Authority had providers block them. The currency is the Nepalese rupee. For residents, online play means fines and prosecution.
