The Penal Code enacted by Law No. 11 of 2004 punishes organisers and players alike in Articles 274 to 277: running a game carries up to one year in prison and a fine of up to 5,000 riyals, taking part up to three months and 3,000 riyals, and in a public place up to six months and 6,000 riyals, with stakes and equipment confiscated. The ban rests on sharia as a source of legislation. There are no licensed casinos, bookmakers or lotteries; horse and camel races are held without wagering. The Communications Regulatory Authority (CRA) and internet providers block access to gambling sites, and gambling is among the filtered content categories. The currency is the Qatari riyal.
