Regulation
Tanzania regulates the sector under the Gaming Act 2003 (Cap. 41), supervised by the Gaming Board of Tanzania (GBT), which has operated since 1 July 2003. The Board issues separate licences for land-based casinos, internet casinos, sports betting in both retail and online form, lotteries, virtual games and slot machines; licences run for one year and must be renewed annually. Online casino play and online sports betting are therefore legal, but only through operators holding a local licence. Gambling advertising is restricted by regulator decisions. The currency is the Tanzanian shilling, and payments run mainly through mobile money — M-Pesa, Airtel Money and Mixx by Yas. Operators pay tax on gross gaming revenue, and tax on player winnings is withheld at payout. Players should confirm that an operator appears in the GBT register.
